 If you're going overseas to escape the glum British weather, don't be left without a smile because of poor oral health.The Dental Helpline, which is run by independent oral health charity advice the British Dental Health Foundation, is advising travellers to think about their oral health as well as swimwear when planning their holiday.
They have issued a holiday top ten teeth tips list to help travellers to prepare: - If you have not had a check-up recently, book an appointment to see a dentist before the holiday to avoid any holiday dental emergencies.
- Check that your holiday insurance has dental coverage and if you don't have holiday insurance make sure you get cover.
- If you have any crowns or dentures pack a repair kit as part of you first aid supplies.
- Buy travel size toothpaste and mouthwash, to save on weight and pack them in your hold baggage so they don't get confiscated at security.
- Use bottled water to clean your teeth in the morning and in the evening and avoid an upset stomach, as you may not be able to drink local tap water in some countries.
- Carry some sugar free gum containing Xylitol for after and in between mealtimes to help maintain a healthy mouth.
- Don't forget to apply sunscreen to the lips to help protect against cancer.
- You are more likely to treat yourself on holiday and have more sugary foods and drink, don't forget to carry on with your usual dental hygiene routine to maintain a healthy smile.
- Above all, don't forget your toothbrush!
Dental Helpline Advisor Karen Coates said: "Although dental emergencies can develop at any time, it can be upsetting if they occur but you should not let it ruin your holiday. By following our ten top tips, you can be prepared if something does go wrong. "If you have an accident, or experience dental pain, seek immediate treatment. Your holiday representative, the hotel reception or other holidaymakers may be able to recommend the best clinic or dentist. "The Dental Helpline recommends that you take extra care and stick to your usual strict dental routine while away, including brushing for two minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks, chewing sugar-free gum for 10 minutes after eating or drinking anything and also using a mouthwash.
