28th October 2019

This year, on Wednesday 13 November, the Oral Health Foundation is encouraging everyone to go blue in support of Blue Wednesday.

This is just one of a number of activities happening during Mouth Cancer Action Month, but it provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of mouth cancer and have fun while you do it!

We would love to see even more people than ever before going blue to help spread the word about the mouth cancer and here’s how you can get involved!

GO BLUE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

This is the easiest way to get involved. Simply find something blue, whether it’s a tie, a dress or even just some blue lipstick and post a picture on social media with the hashtag #BlueWednesday. You can also use this as an opportunity to double down and also post a #BlueLipSelfie, a joint campaign with our sponsors Denplan, part of Simplyhealth.

Supporting Mouth Cancer Action Month with a Blue Lip Selfie is really easy. All you need to do is take a picture of yourself with blue lips, using either blue lipstick or some plastic blue lips which you can buy from our shop, and share it to social media including #BlueLipSelfie in your post.

HOLD A BLUE WEDNESDAY EVENT

Blue Wednesday offers a great opportunity to hold a fun event with some sort of blue element. You could hold a raffle with just blue items, or a guess the bear’s name with a blue teddy bear.

No matter what you decide, why not try to sell some blue-ribbon badges. Wearing a blue-ribbon badge can help spark conversations about mouth cancer and bring vital information to people who need it.

You can purchase a Blue Ribbon Appeal Kit in the Oral Health Foundation online shop from £1 per badge.

Holding an event will take some planning and time but it really will go a long way to help raise the profile of mouth cancer in the UK.

Just make sure if you do plan on holding an event make sure you tell us about it so we can help shout about it on social media!

HOST MOUTH CANCER EXAMINATIONS

Catching mouth cancer early is vital to reducing the number of lives lost to mouth cancer. Dental visits are essential to making this happen.

Unfortunately, there will be Brits across the UK who are not registered with a dentist. Many of these people will be at risk of mouth cancer and unaware of the signs and symptoms.

One of the best things your practice can do to support Mouth Cancer Action Month is to use Blue Wednesday as an opportunity to host a session of free mouth cancer examinations.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to spread awareness of mouth cancer to people who may not otherwise receive that vital information.

It is ultimately a chance to save a life that may otherwise have been lost. This is exactly what Blue Wednesday, and Month Cancer Action Month is all about.
