Oral Health Foundation Approved Logo

The Oral Health Foundation evaluates consumer oral health care products to ensure that manufacturers' product claims are clinically proven and not exaggerated. Oral care products may find their way into everybody's shopping trolley, but we have found that only a quarter of us understand what ingredients they are made from and their purpose. We also know that almost three quarters of us do not always believe the product claims made on these products.

Giving people the added level of assurance they need, and deserve, is why we feel our product Accreditation programme is so important. That's why our independent panel of internationally recognised dental experts study all the claims carefully to make sure they are true, and backed up by reliable scientific evidence.

For more than 20 years, we have helped the dental profession and consumers make informed choices about which oral care products they buy. Accreditation gives us the opportunity to provide people with information, protection and education, in a ‘shorthand' form, delivered via recognition of the charity's ‘Approved' Smiley-face logo.

Currently there are more than 150 approved products on sale in 60 countries around the world. So when you next visit your supermarket, beauty retailer or pharmacy, look out for those products that carry the Oral Health Foundation 'Approved' logo.

Ingredients Glossary

Dental products may be commodities that find their way into everybody's shopping trolley, but a new survey by the Oral Health Foundation has found that only a quarter of people understands what ingredients they are made from and their purpose. The same survey also revealed that almost three quarters of people did not always believe the product claims made on dental products.

When you glance down at the ingredients list of a typical toothpaste or mouthwash it is easy to see why people may have some difficulties. Even common ingredients like water may sometimes be described in terms that not everyone will understand such as ‘aqua'.

As a result, we have decided to publish a glossary of common ingredients and their purposes, to help educate and inform consumers. With a long track record of educating the public on all aspects of oral health issues, we hope the new glossary of common ingredients will help more people to make an informed choice about which products to buy and how it can help their oral health.
