Word of Mouth: December 2014

Hello, and welcome to this year-end edition of Word of Mouth.

What a year it has been! The second of our two national campaigns, Mouth Cancer Action Month, has just wrapped up for another year, and I would like to thank everyone who got involved. We called for Blue Lip Selfies and for people to join in with Blue Wednesday, and you can read about the campaign on page four.

One of the biggest problems teeth encounter heading into the festive season is the frequency of sugary foods and drinks they come into contact with. Fruit juice is one drink that has found itself at the centre of attention, with experts toing and froing on its benefits. However the situation appears to be clearer after research from the US suggests 100 per fruit juice does not cause tooth decay, Find out what our Chief Executive, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, thinks on page ten.

I'd like to say a huge congratulations to my PR colleagues David Arnold and Doychin Sakutov who jumped out of a plane in the name of charity. The duo raised almost £1,000, and along with the rest of the team raised more than £3,000 for the British Dental Health Foundation. Read about their experience on page six.

As 2014 draws to a close, we talk to Dr Carter about the year in dentistry and what some of the changes mean. We also look to the future, and we give three of our best oral health tips to take into the New Year.

Speaking of the New Year, the most popular New Year's resolution is to go on a diet. To help you keep your teeth in tip-top shape, read the thoughts of Trustees Ben Atkins, Janet Goodwin and Nairn Wilson on the top ten diets and how they affect your teeth.

On behalf of everyone here at the British Dental Health Foundation I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
