Sheffield Run Crew

Hello!  Welcome to the Sheffield Mouth Cancer Run Crew fundraising page 😊

We are....Artysha, Hanya, Alex, Hannah, Tiffany and Seb! We will be running the Sheffield Half Marathon on 29th March 2020 to raise funds for the Oral Health Foundation.

We are a group of dentists and friends who share a united goal in raising awareness about mouth cancer; a devastating disease with increasing incidence and worsening survival.

Please support us to take on this challenge for the #MouthCancerActionCampaign and generously donate to this important cause. Thank you in advance.

Meet the team and find out more about our personal journeys:

Arty Hey I’m Arty! I am a dentist working in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology in Sheffield. I’ve always run to raise awareness about important issues that I hold close to my heart. Two years ago I lost my grandmother to oral cancer and having worked for the NHS I’ve worked really closely with people who have had the terrible disease. I’ve seen the devastating effects that oral cancer has on a personal level as well as a clinician. Early detection is so important and this is why I want to raise awareness for such an important charity. A simple dental check-up could save your life.
Tiffany Hey I'm Tiffany! I am a specialty dentist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Leeds Dental Institute. My first run was as a DCT1 in Sheffield, completing the 10k for Weston Park Hospital charity. From there, I have gone on to run further 10ks and half marathons in Leeds, and in Australia (Sydney, Wodonga and the Surf Coast) before completing the Melbourne Marathon in 2017. My latest races were running the Manchester and Cardiff Half Marathons within 2 weeks in 2019 for the Macmillan charity. I am excited to be running for the Oral Health Foundation this time as I fully support spreading awareness about oral health which helps towards addressing inequalities to dental care access.
Hannah Hi I’m Hannah! I’m a registrar in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in Sheffield. Prior to this role I have worked in dental practice and within the hospital environment where I have seen first hand the impact oral cancer has both on patients and their families. Despite my love of fitness and teaching fitness classes in my free time, this will be my first half marathon and I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge to raise awareness for such a good cause.
Alex Hello, I'm Alex! I have always been a keen runner but after a few years of inactivity, got back into this in June 2019. I completed my first 10k race in September 2019 in a fairly respectable time, however, this meant my girlfriend Artysha, convinced me to sign-up for both a half-marathon (Sheffield) and marathon (Brighton) all within the space of a few weeks in 2020!
I wasn’t too aware of the dangers or causes of oral cancer but now understand how prominent this is and I intend to help raise awareness and much needed funds for this fantastic charity.
Hanya Hey I'm Hanya! My desire to raise awareness for oral cancer, coupled with my love for long distance running (and the beautiful sights of the peaks) has driven me to run the Sheffield half marathon. I am excited to be running alongside friends and colleagues who share the same interest as me; and together we hope to make a difference to those suffering from this devastating cancer. Please support us in this important cause by donating to the Oral Health Foundation - a little will go a long way.

Why we're doing this

One of the things we've learnt through the Mouth Cancer Action campaign is just how poor the awareness around the disease is. Around two-in-three (64%) do not know the major signs and symptoms for mouth cancer. Awareness on the major risk factors of mouth cancer is as low as 21%.
These shocking statistics might also explain why for years we've been losing the fight against mouth cancer. Rates of the disease have increased by 64% in the last decade and by 171% compared with 20 years' ago. New cases of mouth cancer in the UK now stand at 8,337 a year.
This is where Mouth Cancer Action come in. Mouth Cancer Action is dedicated to raising awareness of mouth cancer including the major signs and symptoms as well as the risk factors. The charity campaign also aims to raise awareness about the support and information available for those who have suffered with mouth cancer and their families.
With the help of Mouth Cancer Action we can help make a difference and turn the tide on mouth cancer. We would really appreciate any support you can give to help us in our mission.

Best wishes,

Sheffield Mouth Cancer Run Crew.
