The sun may not have been smiling down on guests on London yesterday but even the rain failed to dampen spirits as the 40th National Smile Month was officially launched with an amazing birthday party!

For 40 years National Smile Month, the UK’s largest and largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health, has helped oral health messages reach millions of people in every walk of life, influencing smiles across the world.

To commemorate this wonderful achievement, the campaigns organisers, the charity Oral Health Foundation, held a birthday party to bring people together and illustrate how far the campaign has come but also emphasize how far they still have to go to bring better oral health to all.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, officially launched the 40th National Smile Month amongst the flowers and flamingos which grace the beautiful Roof Gardens in London, where the launch event was held. Guests came together to celebrate the birthday party with balloons, banners, streamers and party hats, there was even a giant smiley birthday cake, generously donated by Peppersmith.

This year the campaign is being supported by some of the nation’s best-known brands and retailers. Wrigley’s Extra, Oral-B are platinum sponsors of the campaign, with further support from Polo and Philips Sonicare. They ensured guests left smiling with a goody bag containing some wonderful product samples.

The campaign will as ever deliver the charity’s three key messages as a pathway to good oral health:

  • Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  • Visit the dentist regularly – as often as they recommend.

If you have not done so yet there is still time to support the campaign and take part in National Smile Month, simply visit our register page.
