Ms Wilson, has been ordered to pay over £9,500 by Sunderland Magistrates' Court.

Wilson, of Clara Street, Seaham, was charged with being an unregistered person practising as a dentist or dental healthcare professional.

Under the Dentists Act 1984 and following the High Court's ruling in GDC v Jamous, the legal position in relation to tooth whitening is very clear. The treatment can only be performed by a dentist or a dental therapist, dental hygienist or a clinical dental technician working to the prescription of a dentist.

Investigators on behalf of the General Dental Council (GDC) were offered whitening by Lynsey Wilson at the Guys and Dolls salon in High Street West, Sunderland. They preceded to launch an investigation into Guys and Dolls after receiving a number of complaints, Sunderland Magistrates’ Court heard.

Rebecca Schwartz, prosecuting on behalf of the GDC, said: “Teeth whitening services were advertised on social media, including Facebook."

“Two investigators made an appointment via Facebook with Lynsey. On arrival, they were shown to a treatment room, and given advice about treatment. They commented Lynsey appeared knowledgeable, and said she told them she had treated other people in the preceding months.”

Wilson failed to attend the hearing.
