Many people want whiter teeth. Teeth can darken naturally with age and can become stained by things like tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking.

Tooth whitening can safely lighten the natural colour of your teeth when performed by a dental professional.

What is the best way to whiten teeth?

The safest and most effective way is through your dental team.

They will check that your teeth and gums are healthy first.

Whitening will not work on fillings, crowns or veneers, and it may not be suitable for everyone.

How does professional whitening work?

There are two main types.

Home whitening

  • Your dental team makes thin trays that fit your teeth exactly.
  • You place whitening gel in the trays and wear them as instructed, usually for a set time each day or overnight.
  • Treatment usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.
  • The trays can be kept and reused if needed.

In-clinic whitening

  • Done in the dental surgery.
  • Your gums are protected first.
  • A whitening gel is placed on your teeth.
  • A special light may be used to help the process.
  • The appointment usually lasts about an hour.

Both methods can give good results when supervised by a dentist.

How long does tooth whitening last?

Results can last several years, but this varies.

Smoking and drinks like tea, coffee and red wine can cause staining to return more quickly.

Good brushing and regular dental cleaning help maintain the result.

Are there side effects?

Some people may notice:

  • Temporary tooth sensitivity, especially to cold.
  • Mild gum irritation.

These effects are usually short-term. Your dental team can give advice or products to help.

Do shop-bought whitening products work?

You can buy whitening strips, gels and paint-on products.

These may help remove some surface stains, but they usually do not change the natural colour of your teeth much.

These products contain only a very small amount of whitening ingredient. They are not a substitute for professional whitening.

Can I get my teeth whitened in a beauty salon?

No. Tooth whitening must only be carried out by a registered dental professional (a dentist or dental hygienist/therapist working to a dentist’s prescription, or a clinical dental technician who has had training).

Having your teeth whitened by someone without dental training can permanently damage your teeth and gums.

Always speak to your dental team before whitening your teeth.

They can make sure it is safe for you and help you choose the best option.
